Earlier in the day, Princess Katherine and her children traveled in a state carriage from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade to watch Trooping the Colour. The Princess donned a regimental brooch from the Irish Guards, symbolizing her role as their honorary Colonel. This public appearance follows her retreat from royal duties in January, which was initially attributed to a medical procedure for a non-malignant stomach condition. It was later revealed in March that she had been diagnosed with cancer following the operation and has been undergoing treatment since.
Despite her ongoing health challenges, the Princess provided an update on her well-being, stating that she has made significant progress in her recovery, although her treatment will continue for several more months. King Charles III and Queen Camilla also made their way from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade in a carriage. This year, the King opted for a carriage ride instead of horseback due to his own health issues. The Trooping the Colour event, a grand military display featuring 1,400 officers and soldiers, 400 musicians, and 200 horses, is a cherished tradition marking the official birthday of the British monarch. Although King Charles’ actual birthday is in November, the tradition of celebrating with a public festival and a private celebration dates back to the 18th century.
As the event neared its conclusion, the weather took a turn for the worse, with heavy rain and strong winds challenging the spectators who lined The Mall.
