King Charles and Queen Camilla returned to the Ascot racecourse in Berkshire on June 21st. However, before heading out, the King marked his eldest son and heir’s birthday on social media. A black-and-white throwback photo of Charles and baby William was posted on the official X and Instagram accounts of the royal family to commemorate the Prince of Wales’s milestone.

Although the Prince of Wales attended all four days of Royal Ascot so far this year, King Charles missed the event on Wednesday, holding audiences at Buckingham Palace instead. On this day, the royal couple led the royal procession that kicks off each day’s event at 2 p.m. local time. They rode in a horse-drawn carriage onto the race grounds, joined by family friends Prince and Lady Bamford. Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, were transported in the second of the four carriages in the parade. Princess Beatrice, 35, attended Royal Ascot on June 19th but did not join the royal procession that day. They were accompanied by Lord Frederick Windsor, the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, and his wife, actress Sophie Winkleman.

The attendees in the parade dressed to impress, adhering to Royal Ascot’s strict dress code for the royal enclosure. King Charles and other men donned morning suits and top hats in approved colors such as black, grey, or navy. Women wore hats with a minimum base of four inches, along with skirts, dresses, trouser suits, or jumpsuits.

After the races began, Princess Beatrice presented the award to the winning team of the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, a race renamed in 1991 to honor her grandfather, Prince Philip, who passed away in 2021. Royal Ascot is a long-standing highlight on the royal family’s calendar, and the late Queen Elizabeth was a great supporter of the equestrian event. Over her career, 24 of her racehorses won prestigious horse races.

This year, many members of the royal family have attended, including Princess Eugenie, Princess Anne, Peter Phillips, Zara Tindall, Prince Edward, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Lady Gabriella Kingston, in her second appearance with the Royals since her husband’s recent passing. Prince William attended Royal Ascot on June 19th, even though he did not spend his birthday there. After riding in the royal procession, the Prince of Wales caught up with his in-laws, Carole and Michael Middleton, who made their first appearance since their daughter, Kate Middleton, publicly announced her cancer diagnosis. At one point, Prince William assisted his mother-in-law when her heel got caught in the grass, causing her foot to slip out of her shoe. William held Carole by the arm so she could fix the minor wardrobe malfunction, and they laughed together.

Although she made an appearance at Trooping the Colour on June 15th, Princess Kate did not attend Royal Ascot. The outing for the King’s birthday parade marked her first time joining the royals at an event since Christmas as she continues her treatment. However, it did not signal a full return to public life. She has been prioritizing her health and recovering privately at home. A royal household insider tells People exclusively that she is dealing with it the best she can.
