Everyone is saying same thing as Japanese Empress wears face mask next to Queen Camilla
Empress Masako wore a face mask while riding in a carriage through London with Queen Camilla, although it may not be for the reason you think.
Empress Masako of Japan has provoked a reaction on social media with her decision to wear a face mask while accompanying Queen Camilla on a carriage ride in the Semi-State Landau.
The Empress and Emperor Naruhito of Japan are beginning a three-day state official state visit, and following a ceremonial welcome at the Horse Guards Parade travelled to Buckingham Palace for a private lunch.
The Queen travelled with the Empress, both dressed in stylish yet classic white, although the face mask worn by the Japanese royal led some to ask questions.
One X user commented: “I wonder why the Empress is wearing a mask”, while another added: “Why is the Empress wearing a mask? She didn’t have it a few minutes earlier.”
A third chimed in: “Wonder why the Empress is wearing a mask? I mean, she hasn’t worn one up until that point has she?” and a fourth said: “Why is the Empress wearing a mask???”
The Empress reportedly has an allergy to horse hair.
While wearing a face mask was a common sight during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has once again fallen out of use in many Western countries.
However, the Empress was wearing the mask for a different reason, although still one connected to her health and staying well during her visit.
Empress Masako is known to suffer from a chronic allergy to horse hair and was exposed to the animals while riding in the open-top carriage.
A private lunch is being held at Buckingham Palace for the visit.
Later this evening the visiting royals will be treated to a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace, with many senior royals expected to attend.
However, there will be one last-minute absence, as Princess Anne has been forced to miss out after sustaining a concussion in an accident on Sunday evening.
King Charles and Emperor Naruhito will both make an address, before a jam-packed schedule on Wednesday and Thursday to continue the visit.
Prince William has been his father’s right-hand man for the visit.
Tomorrow, June 26, the Emperor will visit the Francis Crick Institute and enjoy a dinner hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh at the Guildhall.
Then on Thursday, the visiting royals will officially say their goodbyes to the King and Queen before paying a visit to the Young V&A where the museum’s Japan: ‘Myths to Manga’ exhibition is on display.
Their final engagement will be a poignant one, as they will travel to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle to lay a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II.
