Stepping in for King Charles at the solemn D-Day ceremony, Prince William carried out his first duties as a stand-in for the monarch. King Charles, who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, was advised that attending the event would be “step too far”. He spent time with veterans at the Canadian service on Juno beach and engaged with local residents in Arromanches.

The touching exchange occurred when an elderly gentleman adorned with a Union Jack flag and his war medals inquired: “I was going to ask you if your wife was getting any better?”
The Prince warmly responded: “Yes, she would have loved to have been here today. I was reminding everybody, her grandmother served at Bletchley so she would have had quite a bit in common with a few of the other ladies here who served at Bletchley but never spoke about it until the very end.”
