Today, Prince William gave a rare update on the Princess of Wales amid her cancer recovery as he attended a poignant event alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla.
As William met veterans to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, one war hero asked the future king if his wife, who is undergoing preventative chemotherapy treatment, is getting any better. William replied, “Yes, she is. She’d have loved to be here. I was reminding everyone that her grandmother served at Bletchley, so she would have had quite a bit in common with a few of the other ladies here who served at Bletchley but never spoke about it until the very end.”
Princess Katherine’s paternal grandmother, Valerie Glassborow later Middleton, worked at the Second World War code-breaking center, and in 2014, the princess visited it to see where her grandmother would have once worked.
William’s encounter with the veteran came after Charles and Camilla appeared to fight back tears as they listened to another D-Day veteran remember the horrors of war during an emotional ceremony today. He described how he and his comrades bravely jumped from boats after crossing the English Channel to land on the beaches of northern France, which proved to be the turning point in the Allies’ Second World War victory. He said, “So many men and women, including my dear friend Fred, joined up with me but unfortunately never made it,” and it left Camilla visibly overcome, with Charles also dabbing his eyes.
Queen Camilla’s surprising choice of outfit color marks a stark contrast to many of the other guests in attendance, and her bold choice of outfit actually had two very sweet meanings behind it. It is thought that the Queen’s pink outfit was actually a subtle nod to the neighboring nation, as it was the very same outfit she previously wore last year for her state visit to France. The decision to wear the same outfit at such a significant event shows a clear nod to her earlier connection to France and the UK’s ongoing close partnership with the European nation.
Equally, the choice of a pink outfit also echoed advice that the late Queen Elizabeth had lived by, as the former monarch also used it as a point of wearing bright colors at large scale events in order to stand out from the crowd and make herself clearly visible to well-wishers.
At the same time, the Duchess of York, who faced her own brave battle with cancer, gave an update on both her health as well as the king and Princess of Wales after the royal family had a double cancer scare.
