He asked her to change her name, but she refused to obey the request, which was made for a pretty out-of-the-ordinary reason. There were already two royal ciphers with a C and a crown above: Charles and Camilla. It would be too confusing to have another. Charles hoped the princess would alter the spelling of her name to avoid any confusion, suggesting she change it to “Katherine” with a K. However, the princess stuck with “Catherine” with a C.
Prince William’s brother also noted the strangeness of the discussion but got no reaction from William, whose face was blank at the time. The potential disagreement does not seem to have affected the relationship between Catherine and Charles, as he refers to her as his beloved daughter-in-law and praised her courage when she confirmed her cancer battle in a video message.
A former royal insider commented on Charles’s statement: “I noticed in the king’s statement of support after her broadcast, he said he was in close contact with his beloved daughter-in-law. I was struck by the fact that he didn’t say ‘close’ but ‘closest’.”
