Prince William and Queen Camilla have recently demonstrated a unified front in support of King Charles, who is battling illness. However, their relationship wasn’t always so harmonious.

Royal expert Hilary Fordwich shared with Fox News Digital that, initially, Prince William had little affection for his stepmother. Following the messy public breakdown of his parents’ marriage, Prince William harbored a strong dislike for Camilla. Fordwich noted, “From the outset, the heir to the British throne had no love for his stepmother.”

Despite these early tensions, William has come to appreciate Camilla’s steadfast commitment to duty. Over time, they have grown closer, especially as they bonded over shared experiences, such as adapting to King Charles’s illness. Fordwich explained, “They have strengthened their relationship over time and grown closer as they navigated the challenges together.”

Author Robert Jobson revealed that Camilla once made a point to show William that she and Charles were not to be trifled with. According to Jobson, Camilla insisted on Charles and herself going ahead without waiting for William and Kate when they were kept waiting for several minutes. Jobson wrote, “All William and Catherine could see as they emerged were the motorcycles and blue flashing lights disappearing in the distance.”

Camilla often gave William subtle reminders of her role in the monarchy. Fordwich continued, “Prince William appreciates that she makes his father happy. Camilla affects King Charles, and William has come to recognize that.”

This newfound appreciation for Camilla comes after revelations that she has been known to assert herself when necessary. It was reported that Camilla did not hesitate to put William in his place if she felt he was being disrespectful to Charles. Jobson recounted an incident where William and Kate Middleton requested to accompany Charles and Camilla in their security convoy as it left Windsor Castle. The younger royals were reportedly kept waiting while the older couple proceeded without them.

Christopher Anderson, author of *The King*, told Fox News Digital that it took Camilla time to build the confidence to confront her stepson. Anderson revealed, “Camilla was so nervous about meeting William that she was trembling when she last saw him at Clarence House and required a drink to steady her nerves.”

Anderson attributed Camilla’s initial apprehension to her role in the breakdown of William’s parents’ marriage. Despite this, he noted that William maintained a respectful and civil demeanor toward her. “William was very cordial to Camilla,” Anderson said. “Their relationship has always been polite.”

Camilla, known for her diplomatic approach, never attempted to interfere in William’s parenting of his children. Anderson explained, “Despite her position, Camilla has never tried to impose her will. She is not a typical mother figure and has avoided meddling.”

Helena Chard, a British photographer and broadcaster, added that disagreements between King Charles and Prince William are not unusual. Chard told Fox News Digital, “King Charles and Prince William have had their differences, particularly over their contrasting views on many issues and their differing leadership styles.”

Prince William tends to approach issues methodically and decisively, often taking a firm stance once he has made up his mind. In contrast, King Charles is more emotional and leads with his heart. Chard observed, “Prince William is more pragmatic and stubborn, whereas King Charles finds it harder to make decisions, often influenced by his emotions.”
