King Charles is set for new title ahead of CHOGM summit

King Charles III is set to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa next month, and reports suggest a significant departure from his usual formal attire may be in the works. Samoan Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa has encouraged all delegates, including the King, to adopt a more casual dress code to match the island’s warm climate and relaxed atmosphere. The aim is to create an environment that allows attendees to focus on the event’s important discussions without the discomfort of formal suits in tropical conditions.

Prime Minister Mata’afa emphasized that Samoa’s unique charm should be reflected in the summit, and a less formal approach would enhance the island vibe she envisions. During a meeting earlier this year with King Charles at Buckingham Palace, the Prime Minister discussed the summit and reiterated her hope for a comfortable, island-style dress code. In a video message, she humorously reminded delegates not to pack their suits, signaling a strong push for cultural and climate-conscious attire.

Though King Charles is known for his sophisticated and polished style, he has demonstrated adaptability when visiting different countries throughout his royal career. For past international engagements, the King has embraced more relaxed attire, including tropical shirts and safari suits, which suggests he may do the same in Samoa. While it’s uncertain if he’ll go as far as wearing the traditional Samoan *lava-lava*—a wraparound skirt—his past willingness to forgo ties at certain events indicates he could meet the relaxed expectations with grace and style.

In addition to the wardrobe considerations, there are discussions about bestowing upon King Charles an honorary Samoan chiefly title. Local mayor To’ono Auva’a Iani has revealed that two titles are being considered: *Lau Tō’auma* (the Near East) and *Asomālimalo* (Dawn of the Light). This honor would further symbolize the strong connection between the King and the host nation during this historic visit.

The Samoan Prime Minister’s approach reflects a desire to showcase her country’s culture while ensuring that the CHOGM discussions remain the focus. The relaxed dress code and possible bestowment of a chiefly title both underscore the importance of cultural respect and mutual understanding as key components of the event. As the Commonwealth’s symbolic leader, King Charles will be stepping into a new cultural space, with his sartorial and diplomatic adaptability playing a crucial role.
